ORGANISATIONAL COMPETENCY BUILDING

One of the facets of Business Excellence- as prescribed by the models of Malcolm Baldridge, Deming Application Model and others- focus on People Management aspect of an Organization. The success and failure of the organization is largely decided by the alignment of the people to the organizational goals, their involvement in meeting the goals and their empowerment. When competency and task at hand do not match, it leads to either fear or frustration. The true Human Resource Development happens when the organizational need and the individual needs meet. It is only when the people's tasks and goals are aligned to the organizational vision that the empowerment of people and their competency building happens in the true sense.

The overall Competency Building of an Organization is based on technical and people competencies. The availability of the current technical competencies can be fully exploited only by putting to right use the competencies of the people, coupled with right attitude. All Japanese Management Systems emphasize that the problem solving approach and process improvement should result in Competency Building for the Organization. In other words, it should be 'problem solving' for competency building, rather than mere 'solving the problem'.

The inspirational Guru Shiv Khera aptly puts that, even if an organization buys an expensive equipment, it can be put to real use only when the people using it know which button to hit!.

As the Japanese say, all Organizations have a specific goal to achieve. When the goals are visible, people can relate the task to the goal. It is then that the joy of work happens.
