MANUFACTURING
EXCELLENCE
The success
and failure of any Organization
is decided by the ability of
the Organization to properly
manage its resources. In other
words, the efficiency of the
resource management decides
the profitability of the organization.
Traditionally, most of the management
systems have been declared inefficient,
largely due to a considerable
amount of waste (or ‘muda’
as is called in Japanese) being
generated in the form of machine
downtime, high WIP, underutilized
workmen in terms of number and/or
time, large amount of quality
rejects, longer lead time than
what the customer can accept,
etc.
The manufacturing
cost is a substantial part of
the total product. The more
complex is the product /the
manufacturing system; the less
is the efficiency of the resource
management. This leads to a
higher manufacturing cost than
for the competitors. Ideally,
the manufacturing system adopted
by the Japanese has ‘zero’
inventory, and minimum or zero
machine breakdown. The systems
used are Lean enough to optimize
resource consumption.
Achieving resource
productivity in a manufacturing
system requires more scientific
way of studying material flow
using the lean manufacturing
principles. Improvement of machine-
excellence requires technique
like TPM (Total Productive Maintenance).
Continuous improvement requires
more of employees’ involvement
through Quality Circle, Six
Sigma initiatives etc. The reduction
in manufacturing cost requires
a holistic approach.
